They should’ve waited for backup. Okay, yeah, there were lives at stake - but weren’t there always? Danny didn’t like where this was going and he was fucking scared. Just a few feet away from him was Wo Fat, surrounded by his closest circle of confidants. And that was the problem. This was too good for Steve to stay away. Steve, who was covering Danny, who was hiding with his sniper rifle just a few feet behind Danny. Steve, who drove here like a crazy person. Steve, who needed this so bad, who needed to kill Wo Fat himself for what the man did to his family.

And Danny was yelling at him. No - hissing, through their intercom, because the bad guys weren’t supposed to hear them. “You are crazy! I cannot even begin to explain how crazy this is! You need help. I mean it. Get some help because this is a whole new level of crazy and you will get us killed! Do you hear me Steven - you will get us killed. Both of us. Dead. Because you’re stupid and arrogant and selfish!” Steve was trying to calm him down. But it wasn’t working. Danny was too angry, because this really was fucking dangerous.

They really should’ve waited for backup. Because at some point during his fight with Steve, Wo Fat noticed them. At some point, he sent his own men out to get rid of them. They saw Danny first. They were going to kill Danny first. The only thing that stopped them from killing Danny was Steve. Because he saw them. Because Steve would have done anything to keep Danny safe. Because for him, life was meaningless without Danny. So Steve left his cover and went for Danny. And as the bullets perforated his body, as the explosion hit him - the last thing he thought about was Danny.

Just seconds after that, backup finally arrived. A minute after that, Wo Fat and his guys were taken into custody. A couple of additional minutes later, the ambulance finally arrived. They took Steve and Danny, who was nearly out cold. The last thing he thought about before he lost his consciousness was that he had to apologize to Steve for yelling at him. For not trusting him. Because Steve had saved him, as always. Just like he had saved him five months ago, when Rachel and Gracie left the island, because fucking Stan got a fucking new job. Back then, everything seemed lost. Until Steve saved him by loving him, like no one had ever loved him before. He had to apologize to Steve. He would. And Steve would forgive him, as always. Eveything was going to be alright.
Only it was not. Because he wouldn’t be able to apologize. Because Steve wouldn’t be able to forgive him. Because Steve dies on the ride to the hospital. And Danny would never get another chance to change those last words that he said to the love of his life.
